An interesting Mannochmore 27 Year Old by Three Rivers indie bottling company. If you've not heard of the distillery before, don't worry, not many have. Widely regarded as one of the best Islay malts from the early 1980s (when the distillery stopped producing whisky), Port Ellen single malts are some of the most highly sought after Scottish whiskies. Which is quite a reputation to live up to – but this Silver Seal bottling manages it without breaking a sweat. On the nose, it’s a nutty delight; bags and bags of walnuts followed by smoky bonfire and hessian notes. As you sip, there are huge waves of salt and peat (obviously, it’s an Islay) followed by herbal teas. Diluted, it opens up to reveal lemony, almond notes and even more smoke. In short, a complex and compelling whisky.
