The Glen Moray Fired Oak is the latest release from the distillery that follows on from the popular Cider Cask expression. In this instance, Master Distiller, Graham Coull, has aimed to draw heavily on bourbon influences, once again pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the world of whisky.
Coull used a “precise firing regime to achieve exactly the right level of char” on the virgin American oak casks that the whisky was finished in, having already spent the majority of its 10 year life in ex-bourbon casks.
The time spent in the charred wood amplifies the flavours that have already been picked up in the first stage of maturation – smoky vanilla, oak and a subtle sweetness of dark chocolate are the stars of the show here as the dram comes alive on your nose and palate.
It has taken time and a great deal of care to get this whisky to the bottle and now that it’s finally here, it’s time to enjoy it.
