Bruichladdich Octomore 14.1 is an Islay single malt Scotch whisky and became the highlight of the spectacular 14th annual release of the Octomore series. In 2017, distilleries of 100% Scottish-grown Concerto barley on the Scottish mainland produced the limited edition Bruichladdich Octomore 14.1, which was heavily peated single malt after being malted to 128.ppm. Aged five years in first-fill ex-American whisky barrels before being bottled at 59.6% ABV. As young and vibrant as its predecessors, the Octomore 14.1 epitomizes the power and potential of its essential components. This serves as the series’ primary foundation and provides a needed distinction from the other expressions.
The aroma of this light amber-colored whisky is open, offering flavors of smoked vanilla, sweet caramel, and toffee, balanced with a hint of sooty smoke and subtle coconut and flaked almonds. Rich barbecue pork is complemented by a hint of citrus and an identifiable earthy smokiness, akin to lemon meringue pie.
On the palate, there is bright citrus, smoke, and a noticeable minerality, which are followed by charred oak and beach bonfire embers. Bright flavors of pear, gooseberry fool, and green apple simultaneously provide vibrancy and depth, while earthy smoke balances the toffee and creamy vanilla. With a subtle hint of heather honey, roasted coffee, clove and nutmeg start to emerge. Finishing notes of charred heather and gorse blossoms meld with Octomore’s unique earthy peat smoke and a trace of salt spray, which balance off the butterscotch and vanilla flavors.
