Savour the flavor of the Scottish distillery Bruichladdich Octomore 13.1 peaty Islay single malt Scotch whisky. It has a 137.3ppm phenolic content and is produced solely from premium Scottish barley grown on the island of Islay. After being distilled in 2016, it was allowed to age for five years in American white oak first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, where it picked up moderate aromas of vanilla, spices, and nuts. Then, the alcohol strength 59.2% was put into elegant black matte bottles. The very experimental and cult malt whisky, edition No. 13, is the smokiest malt whisky in the world. Its peat and smoke are unmatched, yet it has a mild complexity and subtle refinement.
The initial notes of this amber-hued, orange-brown Bruichladdich Octomore 13.1 whisky are sweet, nutty smoke, rich in barley sugar, and ripe fruit. Ripe pear and syrupy apricots, with notes of barley flour, Crème Brulee, honey, and tablet, all accompanied by malty vanilla. The American oak adds burnt oak, coconut, and almonds. Together with the charred oak, the subtle yet potent peat smoke highlights earthy, leather, and boot polish notes.
A thickly smoked grain flavor that tastes like smoked granola with honeyed fruit permeates the mouth, giving it a viscous texture. The intricacy of the tongue can be unraveled with a second sip, as gooseberry citrus and sweet Turkish delight are balanced with notes of charred heather, smoked apricot jam, barley flour, and peat embers. Finished with chocolate-limes, sugared almonds, and oak chips with a hint of spicy aniseed. The smoke is enhanced and the whisky’s minerality is highlighted with a drop of water. The sweetness diminishes towards the finish, leaving behind a dry heathery peat smoke and an earthy, mossy touch on the palate. A serene blend of floral notes such as rose and geranium, along with salty-citrus, completes this exquisite expression of the Octomore paradox.
