Introducing the Secret Islay 4 year old Ittetsu Narita Main Malt Whisky Mew to the Bar, a single malt Scotch whisky chosen by Masashi Gotoh, Carsten Ehrlich and Hideo Yamaoka. Distilled at the Secret Islay Distillery in November 2017, matured in hogshead barrels for four years, and bottled in November 2021 at a 54.2% strength.
Paper cutting was discovered by Ittetsu Narita, who went on to become an independent paper cutter. Making paper cutouts for bars was one of his life’s passions, and he used paper cutting to express the allure of the bar environment and the bartenders that work there. He left behind over a thousand cutouts of the bar he cherished, and it became customary to show off a cutout of one of his creations there. Two of his creations were selected for the label, one of which is for the “Main Malt.”
Take in the aroma of fresh citrus and apple peel, sweet and smoky peat-fired malt husk, and an intense honey suckle floral note. The mouthfeel is rich pea with a lemon pulp and wort sweetness, with a pleasant malty sweetness, peaty and spicy character. Finishing with a fresh, smooth, intensely peated Islay malt. With each expressing Islay qualities, you can appreciate distinct individuality while establishing harmony with the smokiness.
Savor the flavor of the Secret Islay 2017 whisky and lose yourself in the world of Ittetsu Narita’s paper cuts and the bar ambiance that he has portrayed in them.
